Liverpool news: Why is Naby Keita not playing vs Man City? Is he injured?

The Reds face their Premier League rivals in the second of three International Champions Cup fixtures over in the United States.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic have joined up with Jurgen Klopp’s squad for the clash at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford after their World Cup exertions but are named on the bench.

One big-name absence from the squad is summer signing Naby Keita, who has impressed across pre-season thus far.

The Guinean joined from RB Leipzig for £52.75million after a deal was agreed 12 months ago and has featured in all of Liverpool’s warm-up matches until now.

But the 23-year-old misses out against Premier League champions City as a precaution having complained of a stiff neck after Liverpool’s lengthy travels.

The Merseyside outfit spent eight hours on a plane on Tuesday (UK) as they flew from Charlotte, where they played Borussia Dortmund on Sunday – losing 3-1.

Klopp explained to LFCTV: “He has a stiff neck. It was a comfortable plane when we flew, as you can imagine.

“But it wasn’t comfortable enough [for him] as he has a stiff neck and also slept a little bit like this [awkwardly].

“Now he cannot move it properly. It’s not too cool, but it’s pretty much all.”

It was suggested pre-match that Salah may also miss out against City as a result of the terrible pitch surface at the MetLife, though Klopp suggested that the Egyptian will be involved.

He added: “It’s good to have them [Salah and Mane] back. We will see how long they play.

“We will decide at half-time if they will come on immediately.

“Mo for sure will not [come on at half-time], but maybe Sadio will. We will make a few changes and hopefully we can play good football again.”

Divock Origi and Lazar Markovic are also missing from Liverpool’s 24-man match day squad with it presumed that the pair will now be sold.

Origi has been linked with Valencia as Liverpool hold out for a £27m fee with Markovic reportedly subject to interest from Anderlecht, where he spent last season on loan, and La Liga duo Leganes and Getafe.
