UK broadband boost – Why your internet speeds are about to get much faster

The UK Government has announced plans to bring full fibre broadband to 15million homes by 2025 and to the entire nation by 2033.

The implementation of fibre over copper cables that are becoming increasingly archaic would provide Britons with a huge broadband boost.

Fibre offers faster internet speeds that are more reliable than older technologies.

In order to achieve its lofty goal the Government is investing between £3billion and £5billion to assist companies responsible for providing the new infrastructure.

The Secretary of State for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Wright, insisted the Government wants “everyone in the UK” to experience ultra-fast internet.

He said: “We want everyone in the UK to benefit from world-class connectivity no matter where they live, work or travel.”

Mr Wright added such a move help to build a foundation for the roll out of 5G networks in the future.

He went on: “This radical new blueprint for the future of telecommunications in this country will increase competition and investment in full fibre broadband, create more commercial opportunities and make it easier and cheaper to roll out infrastructure for 5G.”

Ambitious promises have been made by the UK Government before with then Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt stating in 2012 the UK would have the fastest broadband out of all major European countries by 2015.

But earlier this month it emerged the UK was ranked 35th in a global list of internet speeds.

Britain was ousted by Madagascar, Belgium, the US and France in the new ranking table.

The new figures were discovered after over 160million broadband test speeds were conducted to determine the worldwide broadband speed league.

It was discovered the UK’s mean download speeds in megabits per second (mbps) was 18.57.

The average time to download a 5GB HD movie was 36 minutes.

The country with the quickest overall internet was Singapore that brought in a 60.39 mbps average.

Here a 5GB HD movie took an average of 11 minutes to download.
