Which political parties are in the running?

This year’s election is mainly a battle between two major political figures, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former cricketer Imran Khan.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari-led Pakistan People’s Party and other independent candidates will also join the runnings.

There are other smaller parties running alongside these frontrunners, with a total of 100 parties hoping to gain power tomorrow.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is a more conservative, right-leaning party led by the family of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Once the most popular party in Pakistan according to opinion polls from Gallup Pakistan and Pulse Consultant, PML-N has recently fallen out of favour.

Growing unrest within the ranks of PML-N has seen some defections within the party as well as disputes between members.

Corruption convictions given to Nawaz’s daughter Maryam and other senior officials has taken its toll on the party’s popularity.

Former cricketer Imran Khan is leading Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), direct competition to PML-N.

Founded in 1996, the party was created to challenge the Pakistan status quo, and lead change in politics.

At the moment, the party is sporting a platform against the current water crisis in Pakistan, which is seeing several deaths from sewer and water pipelines running together.

The last elections in 2013 saw the party win 28 seats after mixed success running in elections, and Prime Minister hopeful Imran Khan is running on confidence that corrupt politicians could be ousted from the political hierarchy.
