Heart attack warning – seven foods to avoid or risk heart disease

A heart attack is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

The condition, which is also known as a myocardial infarction, is caused by the heart’s blood supply becoming blocked.

It’s a symptom of coronary heart disease; where fatty deposits build up in blood vessels.

Lower your risk of a heart attack by making some changes to your diet.

Cutting out refined grain products is an easy way to lower your chances of a deadly myocardial infarction, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Frozen waffles, doughnuts and white bread are all types of refined grain products, and could increase the risk of heart attacks.

Instead, look for whole grain products, including wholegrain bread, whole-wheat flour, and wholegrain pasta.

“Whole grains are good sources of fibre and other nutrients that play a role in regulating blood pressure and heart health,” said the Mayo Clinic.

“You can increase the amount of whole grains in a heart-healthy diet by making simple substitutions for refined grain products.

“Or be adventuresome and try a new whole grain, such as whole-grain farro, quinoa or barley.”

Fruit and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals.

But, you should limit the amount of coconut in your diet, it said.

Vegetables with creamy sauces – like cauliflower cheese – and canned fruit should be avoided, it added.

“Vegetables and fruits, like other plants or plant-based foods, contain substances that may help prevent cardiovascular disease,” said the Mayo Clinic.

“Eating more fruits and vegetables may help you cut back on higher calorie foods, such as meat, cheese and snack foods.”

Lean meat and low-fat dairy products are some of the best sources of protein.

But, you should avoid high-fat meats, including bacon, it warned.

Eating an unhealthy diet increases your risk of heart disease.

High-fat foods cause more fatty plaques to build up in the arteries.

Lowering your blood pressure could also reduce your chances of a deadly heart attack.
