Greece fires: REMARKABLE moment sky over Athens turns orange amid ‘biblical DISASTER’

There are two raging forest fires near in the coastal villages of Mati and Kineta.

Shocking video footage shows the capital covered in a bright orange haze caused by the devastating fires.

The Parthenon temple, which sits on the hill of the Acropolis at Athens, was engulfed in the orange smoke.

Red Cross officials confirmed 26 bodies were found huddled in the garden one coastal villa in the village of Mati, located 25 miles northeast of Athens.

The latest discovery brings the total death toll to 50, with 150 people believed to be injured on Monday as a result of the devastating forest fires.

’s interior minister Panos Skourletis said the wildfires are a “biblical disaster with human losses”.

Greek people and tourists have been forced to flee the fires near the Greek capital.

Mati resident Kostas Laganos gave a terrifying account of the event. He told Sky News: “Thankfully the sea was there and we went into the sea because the flames were chasing us all the way to the water.

“It burned our backs and we dove into the water.

“It reminded me of the eruption at Pompeii, exactly that.”

Fires first broke on Monday and continued to burn through the night, forcing authorities to issue an evacuation order for visitors and residents.

According to officials, the wildfires are the worst to hit Greece since 2007 when dozens were killed in the Peloponnese peninsula, south of Greece.

Greece has called on the EU for assistance and said Cyprus offered firefighters to help them battle the blazes and Spain offered to contribute aircrafts capable of dropping water on the flames.
