Lewis Hamilton delivers German Grand Prix verdict after sensational victory

The British superstar had never won a Grand Prix starting the race outside of sixth position but produced a masterclass on a day of intrigue and excitement at Hockenheim to seize control of the drivers’ championship from Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel began the day in pole position and appeared set to claim a win on home soil until disaster struck as he crashed out of the race with just 15 laps remaining.

The drama allowed Hamilton to slice through the chasing pack into first position, taking advantage of a rain-threatened race to seal a memorable win ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Speaking moments after the race, the delighted 33-year-old told Sky Sports: ”It’s obviously very difficult from that position [14th on the grid] but you’ve always got to believe.

“I just wanted to stay calm and collected.

“The team did such a great job, the car was fantastic today.

“I’m so grateful, I never would have thought you could do something like that today but I kept pushing and kept believing and it happened. I really manifested my dream today.”

The result means Hamilton now sits 17 points clear of Vettel at the halfway point of the season and the four-time winner credited the elements with helping him secure a vital victory this afternoon.

“It was so tough out there, conditions were perfect for business time,” he laughed.

“When it rained, I knew that I would have a good position but you never knew what would happen after the safety car.

“The other guys behind had the new tyres on but I’m just so grateful for the hard work the team has done and I hope this justifies their belief in me.

“For those who don’t know me, now you do.”
