eBay rare 50p coin selling for huge sum – do YOU have this coin in your wallet?

eBay is one of the most popular destinations for those hoping to pick up a rare coin, and 50 pence pieces are some of the most sought after.

One seller hoping to cash in has listed a VC 50p for £120 – many times the face value of the coin.

Sharing details of the item, casea-83 wrote: “VC 29 Jan 1856 World War rare 50p REG.F.D.2006 mint condition.

“collectable item ideal gift for fathers day any questions just ask ??” (sic)

As well as the £120 Buy It Now price, the seller has offered the option to bid at auction – with the starting bid at a much lower £38.

The coin has garnered interest on eBay, with an average of two views an hour.

But how much is the coin really worth?

Royal Mint reveal 10,000,500 of the design have been minted since it was issued in 2006.

Giving further detail on the design, they explain on their website: “A depiction of a soldier carrying a wounded comrade, with an outline of the Victoria Cross surrounded by a sunburst effect in the background.

“The Victoria Cross is the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

“All who have received it have shown extraordinary bravery, many at the cost of their own lives.

“The original idea for the Victoria Cross was proposed by the Duke of Newcastle in 1854, and the Royal Warrant for the creation of the medal was signed by Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace on 29 January 1856.

“To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the institution of the Victoria Cross, The Royal Mint struck two fifty pence coins.”

The striking coin was designed by Clive Duncan, and featured the 2006 portrait of Her Majesty the Queen on the back.

This is not the only 50p coin to be listed on eBay for an eye-watering sum of money.

A Beatrix Potter Squirrel Nutkin 50p is on offer for £475 on an auction basis.

Listing the coin on eBay, the seller woodw-camil wrote: “Really good condition, please judge by the photos, shiny as you can see you can even see the reflection of my phone!

“50 pence. Raised edges. 2016. Squirrel Nutkin.”

But how much is the Beatrix Potter Squirrel Nutkin 50p actually worth?
