Netflix introduces radical new redesign that makes it easier than ever to browse content

The service has completely changed the way the application looks with the addition of a new sidebar that separates movies and TV shows.

Netflix claims the redesign was based on “rigorous research” on what its users wanted from the service.

The company’s director of product innovation, Stephen Garcia, said: “At Netflix, we are constantly asking ourselves what can we do to make it even easier for our members to spend less time browsing and more time discovering stories they will love.

“We realise that there so many great stories on the service, and that sometimes our members need a little bit of help figuring out where to start.

“That is why we are incredibly excited to unveil a new design for our TV experience that will begin rolling out to members all over the world today.

“The new interface was based on rigorous research and testing around how we can make it easier to find titles on TVs, where navigation can feel a bit tougher when you are restricted to just a few buttons on a remote control.”

Video of the new sidebar in motion shows the options available to the user.

Search, home, series, movies, my list and new options are all easily accessible.

My list allows the user to access their queue of content quicker than ever.

Previously the queue option was at the bottom of the list of genres, meaning tedious scrolling was required to reach it.

Splitting movies and TV series was based on user research according to Garcia.

He insisted when users go to watch Netflix it is highly likely they know if they are in the mood to watch a move or TV episode.

The Netflix employee went on: “The new TV interface was designed to make the Netflix experience simpler and more intuitive in a few different ways. First, it is now easier to search and view new content added to the service.

“It is also far simpler to start browsing with either a series or movie; our research has shown us that while a member generally isn’t sure what exact title they want to watch, they have a pretty good sense of whether they are in the mood for a quick series episode or a longer movie experience. We’ve also made it easier to access titles you’ve saved for later viewing in My List.

“In our testing of this new interface, we saw that that this simpler design helped members find something great to watch.”

In addition to the radical redesign, Garcia noted the change was “one of many improvements” coming to customers in the near future.

He said: “This new design is one of many improvements we will be rolling out over the coming months to make Netflix even better for our members around the world.”
