PS4 firmware update 6.00: PSN name changes on the cards, as Sony unveils new beta scheme

Sony is giving PlayStation owners the chance to test firmware update 6.00.

PS4 users in North America and Japan can sign up to participate in the upcoming firmware beta by visiting the PlayStation website.

Beta registration is open until July 27, so expect the test to go live in early August.

There’s currently no word on a European beta, so it’s worth checking the Sony website for any updates.

If Sony deems it worthy of a test, then it’s fair to assume that the next firmware update will be a big one.

Firmware update 6.00 is expected to finally usher in PSN name changes.

Sony Interactive Entertainment America executive Shawn Layden teased the potential new feature after last year’s PSX event.

“The elves at the North Pole have been working on it,” Layden said.

“Let me put it this way: I hope we’ll see events occur so that you don’t have to ask me that question next PSX.”

Layden would later reveal that enabling PSN name changes were “more complex than you think”, which would explain the delay.

Sony revisited the idea earlier this year, asking fans whether PSN name changes were of interest.

The news comes after Sony launches its new PlayStation Hits range.

Available for £15.99 each, the PlayStation Hits range includes The Last of Us Remastered, LittleBigPlanet 3 and Driveclub.

Fans can also grab the likes of Uncharted 4, Bloodborne and Street Fighter 5.

Elsewhere, EA releases like Need for Speed Rivals and UFC 2 are joined by Ubisoft titles such as Rayman Legends, Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag.
