Fortnite down: Why is Fortnite down – Could Playground mode become permanent in update?

players are wondering what Epic Games has planned as they take their servers offline this morning.

Gamers were kicked out of their games at 9am this morning as Epic Games perform maintenance on the Battle Royale game, but the developers are bringing in some more mystery content.

Epic Games usually brings in a content update every other week, with the developers bringing in the new season weekly challenges on the separate week.

However, both updates are coming into Fortnite on the same day, confusing fans as to just what is going on.

Does this mean Epic Games is bringing in Playground Mode as a permanent fixture of the game, or are we set for a bigger surprise?

Why is Fornite down?

If you are trying to log into Fortnite right now you may struggle, as Epic Games takes the servers offline to perform maintenance.

The servers came offline at 9am BST (4am ET) as Epic Games bring in new content.

Players were booted from their games roughly 20 minutes before the server downtime, which has always been the case.

Normally Epic Games keeps the game offline for roughly two hours during maintenance, but this week might be slightly different.

Epic Games never usually updates new content at the same time as a maintenance downtime, so fans are speculating as to what this could mean.

Could Playground mode become permanent in the update?

Some fans predict the new content update this week could bring the popular Playground mode as a permanent fixture in the game.

Speculation began when Epic Games tweeted they would be performing maintenance and an update last night just hours before they tweeted a technical breakdown of what actually happened when the Playground LTM went live a few weeks ago.

During that time, Epic Games struggled to fix a number of issues on Fortnite, taking the mode offline for more than a week to make it playable.

Given the short period of time between the two tweets, some fans think this is a subtle hint from Epic Games to what fans should expect.

Alternatively, this could mean other content could be brought into the game.

Rumours that a new weapon – an SMG – could be making its way to the game have swirled the internet.

More worryingly, the downtime could point to some major issues in the game, with Epic Games performing some emergency maintenance to fix the issue.

Epic Games has not revealed what this all means, but fans only have a few hours to wait to find out.
