Fortnite Season 5 UPDATE: New skins, map changes and challenges launch was big for EPIC

Epic Games is currently running one of the biggest games in the world.

But while Fortnite Battle Royale has cemented its place as a gaming phenomenon, sometimes it’s hard to gauge just how popular it is.

This is usually done through estimates of how much the game is making on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Mobile.

But this week has also seen some big Fortnite news shared that includes some other impressive stats.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. is an American content delivery network and cloud service provider who work with Epic Games.

And according to the Global Director, Nelson Rodriguez, the launch of Fortnite season 5 helped smash new internet traffic records.

This includes Akamai setting new internal records for a single video game on its network.

Some of the world’s biggest platforms and online services use Akamai so that these latest stats can be seen as pretty big news.

Here’s more from Rodriguez, who confirms: “Akamai Technologies set a new record on Thursday, July 12th, 2018, for the peak level of traffic delivered for a single video game on its network, at more than 37 Tbps peak across all platforms.

“This massive influx of traffic was driven by the launch of Epic Games’ cultural phenomenon: Fortnite, which launched its Season 5 on Thursday.

“To put this into perspective, this level of traffic would be like downloading the average mobile game 2.8 million times per minute.

“This demonstrates both the continued success of Epic Games’ hit title and the power and resiliency of the Akamai Intelligent Platform.”

According to the company’s website, Akamai is the world’s largest cloud delivery platform, delivering 95 exabytes of data a year across billions of devices.

It was recently revealed that Fortnite’s first content update is being prepared for launch later this week.

“Discover what’s new in the v5.0 Content Update! Available tomorrow, July 17 at 8 AM Eastern Time (1200 GMT),” reads an Epic tweet.

This means UK fans can download the update from 1pm BST.

In a follow-up tweet, Epic said that there would be no downtime, and that full patch notes will be revealed at 1pm UK time.

Fortnite Season 5 ushered in lots of gameplay changes to Battle Royale.

Storm circles, for example, can change direction, while motion controls have been added to Switch.

Challenges, meanwhile, are split into free and Battle Pass tasks, while progressive challenges are completed by earning a fixed amount of XP.

Players can also drive karts around the map, which has been updated with new areas and landmarks.
