It’s easy to see why 23andMe is so popular. All you have to do is spit in a little tube and mail it off in a pre-addressed and stamped box, and four to six weeks later, you get a report back that gives you details about your ancestral history and your health. You also have the option to be connected with genetic relatives from around the world. When I completed my own 23andMe test earlier this year, I learned that I still have distant cousins in Reggio Calabria, Italy, where my great-grandfather was born.

What’s more, 23andMe Ancestry + Health also can tell you what your 23 chromosomes reveal about your wellness traits and risks for certain health conditions. For instance, my report says that I am more likely to prefer salty snacks over sweet and that I am likely to wake up at around 8:28 a.m. without an alarm-totally spot on. I also learned that I’m not a carrier for any genetic variants that could increase my risk of certain conditions.
