IRISH PLOT TO SMASH BREXIT: Dublin host Clegg and Adonis as border risk DERAIL exit talks

has fought tooth and nail against a hard since the June 2016 victory, with concerns over the future of the border which divides the island.

Dublin and Brussels argue the border is the single biggest obstacle facing Brexit with officials warning pulling Northern Ireland from the customs union and single market while the Republic remains would preclude an open border.

And on Monday the EU and UK both acknowledged more work was to be done on the border issue, despite good progress on other transition period deal issues.

Today the Irish Government and opposition have welcomed outspoken Remainers Mr Clegg, Lord Adonis and Lord Heseltine to Dublin.

This morning the trio met Simon Coveney, the Irish Foreign Minister who earlier this week warned the UK any “backsliding” on the backstop border proposal would not be tolerated.

Nick Clegg shared a photo of the group meeting Mr Coveney on Twitter, adding: “Great to be in Dublin with Michael Heseltine and Andrew Adonis for a meeting with Simon Coveney to discuss Brexit and what it means for the Irish border.”

Later the trio will hold a press conference with Fianna Fail, the main opposition party in Ireland.

Earlier this week Fianna Fail TD (member of parliament) Charlie McConalogue said the Irish and UK governments needed to do everything in their power to block a hard border.

The TD for Donegal, a border county in the Republic of Ireland, said: “Any move towards a hard border would be disastrous for Donegal, where hundreds of people travel across the border on a daily basis for work, college, medical appointments and other purposes.

“Without even touching on the wider issue of trade, it’s fair to say that any deviation from the current situation will pose major problems for people living in Donegal.

“A hard border will not be tolerated by people living in Donegal or any of the other border counties and we need to see a concrete guarantee that there will be no hard border, not some half way house.”

This is a developing story, more to follow…
