Gennady Golovkin makes huge Canelo Alvarez CHEAT claim after positive drug test

The pair are set for a much-anticipated rematch on May 5 following a draw in the original bout in September.

However, last month, Alvarez tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol following random urine tests.

Alvarez’s promoters claimed the substance came from contaminated meat, with Mexican and Chinese athletes also testing positive recently.

But Golovkin, holder of the WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles, is not believing a word that comes out of the Alvarez camp.

“Canelo is cheating. They’re using these drugs, and everybody is just trying to pretend it’s not happening.

“Again with Mexican meat? Come on,” Golovkin told ESPN. “I told you, it’s not Mexican meat. This is Canelo. This is his team. This is his promotion.

“This guy, he knows. This is not his first day in boxing. He proves he gets benefits from everyone and he can get away with it.

“Check him on a lie detector and then we can find out everything.

“I think it is silly to blame the meat because an athlete at this level should not be caught on the meat.

“I eat Mexican food all the time and I’ve never had that problem.”

The first bout between Golovkin and Alvarez in Las Vegas ended in a controversial draw.

Neither have stepped foot into the ring since that clash though a rematch was announced in January.

The fight is now in doubt though with any punishment for Alvarez’s failed drugs test still to be announced.

Should the fight not happen, Golovkin is interested in fighting Billy Joe Saunders – the holder of the WBO belt.

Golovkin said: “If that fight can’t happen the next step for me is Saunders, since it is my dream to get all the world championship belts.”
