Italy’s TOURIST CRACKDOWN: Scots slapped with €900 fine for swimming in Trevi Fountain

The two rugby fanatics chose to celebrate Scotland’s victory in the Italian capital by taking a plunge in the iconic landmark around 9.30pm on Saturday. One of them was seen wearing a kilt, while the other while spotted wearing only his underwear.

They were fined €450 each.

Officers pulled the men from the waters and cordoned off access to the fountain until 1am to prevent other “tipsy” fans from taking a swim. The men were “cheered on” by a crowd of fellow fans on St. Patrick’s Day, after Scotland triumphed 29-27 against Italy in the Six Nations.

A police spokesman said: “Saturday night was slightly different.

“The first man jumped in wearing his kilt while the second man stripped to his underpants.”

A video showed one of the fans doing a breast stroke in the fountain to cross to the other side with fans cheering and clapping in his support, before he was led away by police.

The man in his underwear was from Glasgow. He has not been named.

The police spokesman added, “Officers were impressed with how polite they were.

“We had some very rowdy Dutch football fans in recently, so we feared the worst.”

Police are well aware to keep a lookout for “fountain bathers”, after two men and a 60-year-old German woman jumped in last year, prompting officials to install turnstiles around the fountain.

Last year, mayor of Rome Virgina Raggi, said she was “fed up” with tourists mistreating the city’s 40 major fountains. She declared a €240 fine to anyone caught sitting, climbing or picnicking on them.

“Our fountains attract trouble,” a police officer said at the time.
