F1 news: Fernando Alonso makes bold Lewis Hamilton claim

The McLaren driver is hoping to upset the odds this year by helping to break the Mercedes’ dominance of recent seasons.

Alonso had a solid two testing sessions and says he feels confident ahead of the curtain-raiser in Australia this weekend.

However, the Spaniard did reveal doubts about his side’s ability to challenge Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes at the front of the grid.

Alonso claims that he is happy with how McLaren have progressed the car but he is still unsure about whether he will be able to stop Hamilton from claiming his fifth Drivers’ Championship.

“Our car showed a lot of potential in the winter tests, although we still have a lot to work on,” he said.

”We already have a good amount of information about the parts and how they work together.

“It’s impossible to make any kind of prediction for the season, Melbourne is a great circuit and I’m excited to see what we can do.”

McLaren have switched their engine from Honda to Renault ahead of the new campaign.

And Alonso says he is excited to give the car its first real test Down Under.

“Australia is the first real test and we have to work all weekend to get ourselves ready,” he added.

”It’s finally time to race, I have a busy season ahead of me.

“I’m really excited to get behind the wheel of the MCL33 in the first race of the year.”
