ROGER FEDERER VS JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO LIVE

[final scheduled for 8pm]

First set: Juan Martin del Potro wins 6-4

Juan Martin del Potro has had five years in the wilderness.

And the Argentine looks every bit the player he was back in 2013.

He wins the game to love and takes the set in the process.

Over to you, Roger…

First set: Federer 4-5 Del Potro

Both men hold their own.

However, there’s no denying Del Potro is on top here.

Federer is having to do everything to stay in the mix but his Argentine rival is in the ascendancy so far.

First set: Federer 3-4 Del Potro

This already has the makings of a classic and we’re just seven games in.

Federer pushes Del Potro close on the Argentine’s serve but the 29-year-old manages to hold his own.

It then looks as if Federer will be broken with Del Potro upping the ante.

But the 36-year-old showcases his best tennis to stay in contention for the first set.

First set: Federer 2-3 Del Potro

Oooo. A few of those break out in Miami as Juan Martial Del Potro breaks Federer’s serve.

The Argentine holds his own serve with ease.

And he follows that up by breaking Federer to love. Early signs of an upset already beginning to surface.

First set: Federer 2-1 Del Potro

Roger Federer’s fitness was called into question before today’s showdown.

But the Swiss star looks in fine shape out there.

He goes 30-0 up on Del Potro’s serve but the Argentine managed to battle his way back to claim the game.

At 30-30 in the third game, Federer then produces a sublime forehand. He closes the game out as Del Potro hits into the net.

And we’re off!

Federer reveals tactic

Roger Federer has revealed how he aims to topple Juan Martin Del Potro today.

“When you are confident and experienced and you have that combination, there’s no real need to panic,” he said.

“Because you can assess the situation quite easily. You’re understanding that the opponent is playing better. It’s breezy. It’s hard to play offence.

“But you need to have a very positive mindset.

“You need to be match-tough, you need to be confident, have experience, and I think I have a bit of all of that right now.”

Del Potro knows how to beat Federer

Juan Martin Del Potro thinks he can spring a major upset and beat Roger Federer today.

“We play great matches together,” he said about his rivalry with the Swiss.

“I love to play against him. He’s the favourite to win tomorrow, but I will try to do my best tennis.

“I beat him in the past, and I know how can I do to repeat that, but is not easy.

“It will be a good challenge to see how my level is against him.

“And then I think everybody was expecting that final, and I will try to enjoy the atmosphere on court.”

Juan Martin del Potro on Indian Wells weather

Juan Martin del Potro is desperate for the windy weather to die down before his final with Roger Federer.

“I would like to play in different conditions tomorrow,” Del Potro said after beating Milos Raonic in his semi-final in California.

“But I don’t know what the weather is going to be.

“Anyway, I play my game and don’t look too much at the conditions.”

Roger Federer previews the final

Roger Federer spoke after his semi-final win over Borna Coric, previewing today’s final.

“I put a lot of effort to get the record (17-0), now the focus is on the final,” Federer said.

“We have had a lot of great matches [with Del Potro].

“We know what the other would do and we are trying to stop each other.”

Roger Federer vs Juan Martin del Potro head to head

Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro have enjoyed a 24-match rivalry over their careers.

Federer dominates Del Potro in the form stats, having carved out a W18 L6 record over the years.

That would suggest Del Potro has a 25 per cent chance of winning this tie.

He last beat Federer back in the 2017 US Open, when the Argentine edged his rival 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) 6-4.

Del Potro also famously beat Federer in the 2009 US Open final.

But Federer has twice beaten Del Potro since Flushing Meadows last year, in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals and the Basel Open final.

Gruellingly for Del Potro, that last win was the third time Federer has beaten him in the Basel final.
