But it has been a struggle since with defeats on the road to England and Ireland, although bonus points have helped them hang onto second place, which they could confirm with victory over France.
Jacques Brunel’s side have also been through an emotional rollercoaster, with Johnny Sexton’s 83rd-minute drop goal robbing them of a win on the first weekend before Maxime Machenaud kicked them to a fine 22-16 victory over England a week ago.
