Russia crisis: What would happen if a nuclear bomb hit London

’s foreign ministry said Mrs May’s House of Commons address was “flagrant provocation” and showed the UK had chosen “confrontation” with Vladimir Putin.

It has increased fears of World War 3 and a direct confrontation between the two military superpowers, with Russia’s federation council spokeswoman adding: “We must react promptly, toughly and proportionately.”

But what would happen if Vladimir Putin does the unthinkable and presses the big red button on his desk in the Kremlin?

Shocking analysis has revealed almost one million people would die and several million would be injured if Putin pulls the trigger and attacks London.

Russia could devastate London with a nuclear attack

Russia boasts the fearsome nuclear weapon RT-2PM Topol, a 800KT warhead which could devastate any city in England – including London.

If London was attacked with the Topol, more than 900,000 people would die and 2.3 million people would be injured, NukeMap has revealed.

The website, which analyses scientific and military data for its harrowing predictions, shows in horrifying clarity the extent to which an H-bomb attack would impact all corners of the city.

If a bomb detonated above the Houses of Parliament, a terrifying fire-ball would spread 1.5 square miles through the heart of London, completely obliterating Westminster, parts of Vauxhall and Waterloo.

Nobody in this area, which includes the tourist hotspot of the Southbank and the Palace of Westminster, would survive.

An air blast would also destroy much of an even larger part of London, levelling most buildings in a huge area measuring 83 square miles.

From Hammersmith in the west to Canary Wharf in the east, and Holloway in the north to Balham in the south, the area would be utterly devastated.

Nuke Map said: “Here most residential buildings collapse, injuries are universal, fatalities are widespread.”

The real danger of nuclear attacks, of course, occur outside of the blast site, with radiation quickly spreading across the city.

Anyone within an area spreading a staggering 238 square miles would quickly become poisoned by the noxious fumes. Without immediate medical treatment, which in this scenario would be unlikely, many people affected here would die – either quickly or agonisingly slowly.

NukeMap noted in morbid detail: “Dying takes between several hours and several weeks.

“Third degree burns extend throughout the layers of skin, and are often painless because they destroy the pain nerves. They can cause severe scarring or disablement, and can require amputation.”

And many more thousands of people would be injured or killed in an area stretching as far east as Dagenham, north as Barney, south as Sutton and west as Hounslow.

Nuke Map explained: “Glass windows can be expected to break. This can cause many injuries in a surrounding population who comes to a window after seeing the flash of a nuclear explosion, which travels faster than the pressure wave.”

With such a horrifying human cost, and the inevitable consequence of retaliatory attacks from Britain, the USA and Russia’s other rivals, Putin’s decision to launch a nuclear attack would plunge the world into a third – and perhaps final – world war.
