Swan Lake: St Petersburg Ballet brings Russian spectacular to London stage this summer

It is one of the newest ballet companies in the world but combines classical Russian training with sensational modern attack.

The Company’s 2015 international season was a total sell out with over 25,000 seats sold. The 2018 UK season is strictly limited and takes place from August 22-26.

The company will perform the ballet masterpiece as it was meant to be seen, boasting gorgeous traditionally painted backdrops, Tchaikovsky’s moving score, a full-sized orchestra and their world-famous prima ballerina dancing Odette/Odille opposite a guest star from the Bolshoi Ballet.

Everyone knows the classic tragic tale of the swan princess and the foolish prince who falls in love with her but is deceived by her evil doppelgänger.

It is constantly performed by companies the world over, but it is always thrilling for UK audiences to see the great Russian style of drama and dance.

Founded in 1994, St Petersburg Ballet Theatre is renowned globally not just for its beautiful Vaganova trained dancers but also for its stunning full-length productions.

Led by prima ballerina Irina Kolesnikova, the company travels internationally performing classical masterpieces from its repertoire including Giselle, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty.

The incredibly popular Company is in such demand that it gives 200 performances every year.

Irina Kolesnikova has a wealth of leading credits under her belt, having been prima ballerina at St Petersburg Ballet Theatre since the age of 21.

Her last Odette/Odile in Swan Lake in London in 2015 was described by the Telegraph as: “Truly a thing of beauty (and) technically flawless.”

Kolesnikova will be joined on stage by an array of guest starts from the world’s leading ballet companies including principal dancer Denis Rodkin, from the Bolshoi Ballet, who has been hailed by the Guardian as “Sensational.” Additional Guest Stars will be announced at a later date.

The London shows will be the climax to a massive world tour, following performances in Spain, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Ireland, France, Italy, Austria, USA, Brazil, Turkey, South Africa, South Korea, New Zealand, Japan, China, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan and Australia.

Arguably the world’s most loved ballet, Swan Lake tells the immortal classic love story of Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.

Performing the full-length production for London audiences, Swan Lake is undoubtedly a production everyone must experience at least once in their life.

Producer Andrew Guild said: “Without doubt, Swan Lake is the world’s most famous classical ballet. And no one dances it as beautifully as The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre. The full length lavish production shows Russian classical ballet on a grand scale. It’s the real thing.

“Gorgeous Tchaikovsky music, magnificent sets and costumes, superb Russian classical dancers and brilliant Guest Stars. I urge every ballet lover not to miss it. See it once, remember it forever.”

Tickets for Swan Lake go on general sale at 10am on Friday 16th March.
