Mike Pompeo: Who is new Secretary of State after Rex Tillerson FIRED by Donald Trump?

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he had replaced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo, and had tapped Gina Haspel to lead the CIA.

“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!

“Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!” Trump said on Twitter.

Who is new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – former CIA director?

Pompeo was raised in Orange County, California. He attended Los Amigos High School and played basketball for the varsity squad.

Pompeo left California to attend the US Military Academy at West Point.

He later served in the US Army, ultimately reaching the rank of captain before leaving to attend Harvard Law School, graduating in 1994.

In 2010, Pompeo defeated State Senator Jean Schodorf for the Kansas Republican primary for the 4th District Congressional seat.

He was reelected in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

On November 18, 2016, then-President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would nominate Pompeo to be the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
