Japanese house of horrors: Babies found preserved in BOTTLES

The ages of the babies and how long they have been in the house for are unknown.

According to reports from the Kyodo news agency in the Japanese capital, termite exterminators yesterday uncovered three or four bottles beneath floorboards of a property that was being renovated in Hakusan, Bunkyo Ward.

The house is around 80 years old and has been left abandoned for the last three years.

The babies were reportedly preserved in a liquid that resembled formalin, a saturated water solution.

A mix of these chemicals is known as embalming fluid and can be used to preserve bodies of deceased persons.

The now-deceased grandparents of the person who once managed the property once lived in the home. They were both obstetricians and gynaecologists.

It had been a rental property for the last 20 years but was recently purchased by a woman and was being renovated.

Police, who have opened an investigation, have declined to confirm the report.

Government data has shown the number of babies born in Japan last year was estimated to have fallen to the lowest since such record-keeping began in 1899.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, 941,000 babies were born in the country last year – some 36,000 fewer than in 2016 ad below one million for the second consecutive year.

Bunko Ward, which has a population of more than 200,000 people, is a residential and educational centre in Tokyo.

It is home to the 55,000 capacity Tokyo Dome and the University of Tokyo’s Hongo Campus.
