England rugby injury update: Eddie Jones reveals yet more Six Nations problems

Daly had missed the first three games of the tournament with ankle and calf problems but proved his fitness during at training session last Saturday.

The Wasps back convinced Jones that he was ready to play and was immediately drafted into other starting line-up in place of Mike Brown.

And Daly was one of the few players to win plaudits after England’s second Six Nations defeat of the year, providing a fine assist for Jonny May’s try and booting over a penalty from 55 metres.

However, coach Jones today admitted his fitness is in doubt because of a foot problem, on which he will have a scan later today.

But the Australian will welcome captain Dylan Hartley back into the starting XV to face Ireland on Saturday assuming today’s medical report on his tight calf produces nothing untoward.

“I expect him to be available,” Jones said.

“If he’s fit he’ll be playing.”

But Jones seemed to indicate he would resist the urge to the ring the changes to avoid England suffering three Six Nations defeats on the bouce for the first time since 2006.

“I think we’ve got the best players here. In 2015, these players were no good. In 2016, they were terrific. In 2017, they were world-beaters and now after two games, they’re no good again,” Jones added with his familiar wry smile.

“They’re good players. Teams have ups and downs.

“It’s an ongoing process for us. I feel we’re moving in the right direction.”

The main challenge for England has come at the ruck, where new regulations and interpretations have left them struggling to win clean, quick ball at the breakdown.

“It’s a difficult thing for the players. They’re giving 100 per cent and the breakdown has changed a lot in the last three or four weeks and we haven’t adapted at all to that,” Jones said.

“There are a number of reasons for that but the only reason we can solve at the moment is our ability to be better at it and to be better at it requires some technical skill and a greater intent to be aggressive in that area.”
