Why Samsung Galaxy S8 owners should wait before upgrading to the Galaxy S9

With Samsung recently unveiling its new Galaxy S9 there will clearly be many Galaxy S8 and S7 owners looking to upgrade.

And with a bunch of new features including an improved processor and better camera it’s certainly worth considering.

The S9 is available to pre-order now with the device landing in stores from March 16th.

However, latest research from price comparison site PriceSpy, suggests that Galaxy fans may be best waiting a few months before investing in this all-new smartphone.

According to their data, PriceSpy is predicting the S9 could drop in value by around £200 after just three months on sale.

“As Apple’s biggest rival, and Samsung’s best-selling model, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is one of the most anticipated mobile phones of the year,” said Olof Karp, country manager of UK & Ireland at PriceSpy.

“Our price history data tells us that prices on new handsets generally drop after about three months.

“We therefore encourage Samsung fans to set up price alerts to track when the Galaxy S9’s price drops to ensure they are getting the best deal.”

The data is backed up by previous Samsung launches with the S8 dropping by around 25 per cent after three months and the S7 falling by a whooping 38 per cent.

Although Galaxy S8 owners could be wise to hold on to their phones for a while it’s worth remembering than some experts are warning that second hand prices for Samsung’s current flagship look set to drop as well.

Phone specialist, Envirofone, says it has analysed sales and industry data and found that the value of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is expected to drop by 8% in the run-up to the launch of the S9, followed by a further 11% after it’s unveiled, which could cost sellers over £50.

The figures reveal that the best time to sell is a few weeks before the Galaxy S9 hit stores, meaning that if you’re looking to get the best deal on your S8, the time to sell is now.

Speaking about the findings, Justin Woolridge, Commercial Marketing Manager at Envirofone, said: “When the latest Samsung handset is released, and during the weeks following launch, we see the value of older handsets depreciate dramatically.

“The market becomes flooded with older handsets, as people look to sell on their old phone after getting their hands on the latest model and, as such, the value of these older phones drops.

“When it comes to selling your phone, being ahead of the curve could mean you get a better deal.

“Those who traded in or sold their old Samsung handset in 2017 got an average of nearly 20% more for their device than those who looked to trade in after the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy.

“Sell now and you’ll get a better deal.”
