It’s safe to say that Nintendo’s new hybrid console has found a good niche in the market.
Not only is it seeing top sales, but the Japanese games giant are hopeful that multiple consoles could be bought by each household.
This of course creates a much wider audience for Nintendo to look to, and is something much less likely to happen with the PS4 and Xbox One.
So how does Nintendo intend to keep things ticking over in 2018?
It appears with new Nintendo Switch games.
As the recent Nintendo Direct confirmed, there’s a good mix of new first-party and third-party games being cooked up for the Switch.
One of those is Super Smash Bros, which is a new game coming to the Switch in 2018.
Not much is known about the new project, only that it will certainly play well with fans.
It’s expected to be a new title in the franchise over a Deluxe port from the Wii U.
It could also be released in the same year as a new Pokemon RPG, meaning some serious gaming could be on the horizon.
That’s great news for gamers but not such great news for those hoping for a Netflix app to appear on the console.
It seems Nintendo are still firmly fixed on bringing new games to the console and less about third-party apps.
This was recently addressed by Scott Mirer, Netflix vice president of device partner ecosystem, who recently gave an update on the situation.
Speaking during a press Q&A panel in Silicon Valley, Mirer is quoted as saying that Nintendo haven’t changed their priorities since the Nintendo Switch was first launched in 2017.
“In the case of the Switch, they [Nintendo] were very focused at launch not on video-use cases, but on gaming cases, video was not a priority for them,” Mirer is quoted as saying by Mobilesyrup.
“Whether that changes over time, we have a great relationship with them and look at the possibility of [supporting] the Switch.
“We each have opportunity cost around that, but at some point, it might happen.”
Fair to say that this could all change in the future, and probably isn’t something that’s worrying either company.
While the Switch would be a great device to include an app like Netflix, most gamers already have another that can fulfil that task.
It may look like the Switch is behind other consoles, but with it being seen as a secondary gaming console already, those other devices should fill that video streaming hole.
As mentioned above, another big game for 2018 could be the release of Pokemon.
So far, not much is known about Pokemon Switch – apart from the fact that we do know it is coming to the Nintendo Switch at some point.
When it does arrive, it will be the first main entry in the Pokemon series released for a home console.
So far, main Pokemon games have only been released on handhelds – with home consoles getting side adventures like Pokemon Snap.
