MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 LIVERPOOL

Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool is an early highlight of the weekend’s Premier League programme.

Old Trafford will be the focus for many football fans this lunchtime as the Premier League sees a mouthwatering clash between second and third.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been praised to the hilt recently but enter this round of fixtures two points worse off than Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho’s big-game approach is, as always, under scrutiny ahead of the rivals’ 200th meeting, which could go a long way to deciding who finishes runners-up to runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 LIVERPOOL

63: Jurgen Klopp wants a bit more guile from his side, so he’s replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with Adam Lallana.

The Ox doesn’t take it too well. He kicks the floor and slouches down on the bench.

60: Smalling shows Salah who’s boss by throwing the winger to the floor. Lucky to escape a booking really. Liverpool continue to probe.

58: Jose Mourinho is screaming at his players to push up the field. It’s all Liverpool at the moment with Manchester United dropping deeper and deeper.

Mane’s flicked cross almost finds Salah in the middle, but Young anticipated it and hoofs clear.

55: And another penalty appeal falls on deaf ears. Robertson’s cross strikes Valencia’s arm but nothing is given. I’d say that was a spot-kick folks. He was more than ten meters away!

53: Penalty appeal! Ashley Young grabs Mohamed Salah inside the penalty area with both chasing Firmino’s lofted pass.

The visiting fans are screaming for a spot-kick, but referee Craig Pawson isn’t interested.

You’d have to say the winger was punished for NOT going down.

50: Early corner for the visitors. It’s floated into the middle where Van Dijk easily rises above Smelling but nods over. Third time lucky for the Dutchman?

48: Ashley Young is doing a hell of a job on Mohamed Salah today. He’s stuck to the Egyptian like glue. We’ve hardly seen him touch the ball.

45: No idea what Romelu Lukaku and Jose Mourinho were discussing. They were completely engrossed in conversation on the way in and out of the tunnel.

How long does it take to say: “Keep bullying Dejan Lovren and pass the ball to Marcus Rashford…”

Anyway, we’re back underway. Not changes for either side.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 LIVERPOOL

HT: An almost perfect first half for United. Mourinho won’t mind that Liverpool have bossed possession. United have scored from two of three chances they have created and their defence has got in a number of important blocks and interceptions when Liverpool have looked dangerous.

Considering this is his first start since early November, Bailly has been tremendous. But so has youngster Scott McTominay in midfield. While delighted by Rashford’s performance, Southgate will be regretting McTominay’s decision to pledge his international allegiance to Scotland.

On the evidence so far, United have not missed Pogba, who got a gashed leg in training yesterday. Sanchez has looked more comfortable having more space.

Liverpool haven’t played badly but so far their attacking threats have been kept on a tight leash. If they get an early goal in the second half it’ll be game on.

Paul: Mourinho has rarely had United playing truly entertaining football, so that overhead from Juan Mata might have been the most my heart has raced during a match in quite a few years!

HT: Manchester-born Marcus Rashford roasts Liverpool-born Trent Alexander-Arnold to put Jose Mourinho’s side in control.

In fact, United have not lost a league game at Old Trafford that they have been leading at half-time since May 7th 1984 (1-2 vs Ipswich Town).

Can Liverpool summon the spirit of 1984 Ipswich? That’s a sentence I never thought I’d write…

45: The Reds win a corner on the stroke of half-time after a bit of confusion between De Gea and Young.

Lovren rises highest at the near post but he’s guided it miles over the bar. Klopp stands arms folded on the touchline. He’s frustrated.

43: Mata could and should have wrapped up the points there. It was actually looked easier than his spectacular overhead effort at Anfield a couple of years ago but he put it just wide.

41: Ouch! Rashford looks for the ball forward and launches it straight into Milner’s face. Don’t worry, it takes more than a ping to the face to keep the Yorkshireman down.

39: Should be 3-0. Dejan Lovren inexplicably plays Juan Mata onside and the Spanish playmaker is in acres of space at the back post as the cross comes in. He has more time than he realises but his acrobatic volley goes wide.

36: Eric Bailly summons his inner Lionel Messi with a nice piece of skill to disposes Roberto Firmino. He follows that up with a drag-back straight to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who nearly threads Sadio Mane through.

I doubt he’ll be trying that again in a hurry.

33: The Ox is the next in the book for stopping a counter-attack. He fouls McTominay and gets a yellow card.

30: Rashford again – and with a similar goal.

A long kick by De Gea and Lukaku proves too strong for Lovren again. He wins their duel and slips the ball through for Mata. And when van Dijk intercepted, the ball broke to Rashford whose shot clips Alexander-Arnold’s heels on its way past Karius.

Rashford’s on fire but is walking a tightrope now after being booked for a late challenge on Milner.

29: Marcus Rashford is full of adrenaline. Why wouldn’t he be? He’s on a bloody hat-trick against Liverpool inside 30 minutes! Anyway, he is booked for a lunge on James Milner.

28: Mohamed Salah looks to pull one back with a signature shot from range but David de gea makes a relatively simple save.

26: Marcus Rashford has scored with 29 per cent of his shots in the Premier League against ‘big six’ clubs, compared to a 10 per cent ratio against the other teams. The kid is basically lethal.

25: He’s got another! That Virgil van Dijk miss is looking pretty BIG now.

Marcus Rashford sweeps home another to double Manchester United’s advantage.

It’s route-one stuff again as Romelu Lukaku beats Dejan Lovren to a long ball forward. Van Dijk’s subsequent tackle on Juan Mata falls kindly for Rashford, who curls it around Alexander-Arnold.

24: Manchester United have now scored the opening goal 352 times in Premier League games at Old Trafford. They have only lost three of the previous 351; most recently against Liverpool in 2008-09.

22: Liverpool bossed the early possession but Rashford has justified the call up for his first Premier League start since Boxing Day with that well-taken goal.

Route-one stuff but the end result justifies the means. A long goal kick by de Gea, Lukaku flicks it on and Rashford anticipated it well. He got the run on Alexander-Arnold then cut inside the Liverpool right back before pulling the trigger and sending a venomous right foot shot past Karius and into the far corner.

His 11th of the season has put United in control – and Gareth Southgate, who has voiced concerns over Rashford’s lack of recent starts, will be hugely encouraged as well.

21: Manchester United are targeting that left flank. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren are having a torrid time trying to keep tabs on Marcus Rashford and the overlapping Ashley Young.

Gary Neville: “Rashford smells blood here.” Quite right.

18: Six of Marcus Rashford’s 15 goals in the Premier League have come in matches against other ‘big six’ teams (40 per cent).

17: Liverpool look to respond instantly with a free-kick just outside shooting range. Firmino collects and bends it over to Mane, who can’t connect at the back post.

14: Wow, Marcus Rashford is back with a bang!

Romelu Lukaku flicks on David De Gea’s long ball for Rashford, who has Trent Alexander-Arnold on toast, before firing past Loris Karius.

Fabulous finish, but It was a pretty basic goal for Liverpool to have conceded. Jurgen Klopp just shakes his head in frustration.

13: Quite possibly the worst corner of the season. Van Dijk and co trundle up but Salah sends it over everyone and out for a corner the other side.

12: Lukaku vs Robertson. First battle goes to the full-back. The Belgian does well to keep the ball in but Robertson nicks it off his toes and clears.

No sign of a parked bus from the hosts.

9: Very tight in these opening exchanges. Neither side is giving an inch with Liverpool content to knock the ball around the middle and quieten down these rambunctious Manchester United fans.

Yep, rambunctious was in my ‘word of the day’ calendar…

6: The first run from Rashford down that left flank comes to an abrupt halt with Salah tracking back. Pace for days those two.

Emre Can takes a heavy touch and slides into Antonio Valencia. First warning for the German midfielder.

3: So it looks like Emre Can has the task of keeping Alexis Sanchez quiet this afternoon. Still, I’d rather that than Ashley Young’s assignment of stopping Mohamed Salah… could be a bloodbath that.

Neither side have taken control in these early stages. Atmosphere is bubbling nicely though.

12:28: Decent atmosphere as the players emerge from the tunnel. We’re two minutes away from one of the biggest games in English football.

MIND GAMES…

12:26: Jurgen Klopp starting with the mind games at Old Trafford.

He’s done his usual routine of watching the Manchester United players warming up, and now he’s standing just outside the tunnel giving Sanchez and co the stare as they walk out of the dressing room.

How could you not be spooked?!

‘I’M A LITTLE BIT WORRIED’

12:23: G-Nev isn’t best pleased with the line-ups today. He thought Mourinho would go with a slightly more defensive approach against a free-scoring Liverpool side.

But he thinks Jurgen Klopp will be happy to see only Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay in central midfield.

“I’ve been thinking all week that Manchester United would and should be a little more defensive in the first hour of this game,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“We all know how Liverpool start games, start second halves and they do just drop a little bit in the last half an hour. Jose got a lot of criticism for his approach at Anfield earlier on in the season but since then in the Manchester City game here, the Tottenham game away, the Arsenal game away, he’s been so attacking.

“I was expecting him to retreat a little bit today but this doesn’t suggest that. I’m a little bit more worried having seen the team.”

THE BATTLE…

12:10: With Manchester City about 966 points ahead of their nearest rivals, today is a clash between second and third.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are two points worse off than Manchester United, but could leapfrog them today with a win.

However, aside from bragging rights, does it really matter?

Chris Smalling certainly thinks so. He says City’s dominance has actually intensified the rivalry between the two clubs this season.

“I think there’s always that rivalry, but even more this year. We’re a lot closer in the table than we’ve probably been for a while. The fact that we’re so close gives it an added intensity,” Smalling said.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

12:05: Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho: “Liverpool are a very good team, with some weaknesses. They’re not a perfect team, but they’re a very good team. That’s why they are where they are. I know my team’s weaknesses. Sometimes I hide them, sometimes I compensate for them. But Liverpool is Liverpool, and we are what we are.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “Me and Jose have a different view. He’s obviously been more successful than me, but I love derbies. I think it’s normal that you feel different before a derby. It’s only a bit more but it does make a difference.”

12:00: The scrutiny on Paul Pogba in recent weeks has detracted from how disappointing January’s marquee signing Alexis Sanchez has been.

The Chilean has scored just once in eight appearances, has frequently given the ball away and has not yet gelled with his new colleagues.

Sanchez has largely operated wide on the left but he still struggled after moving to a more central role for the second half at Palace.

Mourinho persisted with Romelu Lukaku during a lean spell earlier in the season – so he needs to find a solution for how Sanchez fits in.

11:55: Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham is in the Sky Sports studio for today’s game.

He’s looking pretty sharp in his grey three-piece suit despite half the Twittersphere saying he cuts his hair with a butter knife…

Anyway, he thinks we’re going to have an ‘open and expansive’ game at Old Trafford today and fancies Jose Mourinho’s side to collect maximum points.

TOP-SIX RECORD

11:50: Jurgen Klopp’s side have an excellent record against fellow top-six clubs in the Premier League since the German arrived in October 2015.

He has suffered just three top-flight defeats to those opponents and has secured victories at the Etihad Stadium, Stamford Bridge and the Emirates.

Three points at Old Trafford would be considered the sweetest of the lot for Liverpool fans.

11:35: Just the one change for Jurgen Klopp from last week’s win over Newcastle. Yes, I’m ignoring the non-event against Porto on Tuesday.

The German tactician has dropped Jordan Henderson in favour of James Milner. I think the Reds captain suffered a dead leg during the Champions League draw.

Loris Karius keeps his place after a run of good form, while Andy Robertson has been deemed fit enough to start at left-back.

Georginio Wijnaldum returns to the squad, and could make an impact from the bench.

Marouane Fellaini is back in contention for United after being sidelined since January 31 with a knee complaint.

Veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is training and centre-back Eric Bailly is fully fit, but Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Anthony Martial, Phil Jones and Daley Blind remain absent for the Old Trafford encounter.

Jordan Henderson, Andrew Robertson and Georginio Wijnaldum are all available for Liverpool. Henderson has trained after suffering a dead leg against Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday, as have Robertson (knock) and Wijnaldum (illness), both of whom missed that European game.

Nathaniel Clyne (back) is still lacking match fitness and will not be considered yet as manager Jurgen Klopp is happy with his options at right-back.
