The Outsider on Netflix SLAMMED by critics: Jared Leto movie called ‘tediously generic’

The sci-fi movie stars Jared Leto and unfortunately could be another critical flop for the online streaming service.

Already in recent months, the likes of Mute, Bright and The Cloverfield Paradox have failed to impress.

Now, the first few write-ups on The Outsider have been published – and they’re not good.

No Rotten Tomatoes score is live just yet but it’s unlikely to be good: The Guardian, for one, has issued a one-star verdict.

“An unconvincing crime tale from the streaming giant sees the Oscar winner in murky territory taking a shallow, tourist-friendly view of Japan,” they summarise.

AV Club called it “the generic Jared Leto yakuza thriller no one wanted”.

“It’s basically Takeshi Kitano’s Outrage, except that the most notable outrage here involves offscreen accusations of whitewashing,” they swiped.

IGN gave a score of 4.9 out of 10, reasoning: “It’s hard to make an original gangster movie nowadays, and The Outsider doesn’t seem to have tried very hard.

“The film might be a functional crime drama but it’s an incredibly unremarkable one.

“People who are new to the genre might appreciate The Outsider, but people who are new to the genre also have much better films they can start with.”

Slant gave two stars out of four, saying the movie “appears to exist for the sole purpose of watching what happens when you place the very white Jared Leto at the center of the yakuza underworld”.

The Outsider is released on Netflix tomorrow.
