TOTTENHAM vs JUVENTUS

Tottenham and Juventus go head-to-head in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at Wembley.

Spurs are favourites to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League following a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Turin last month.

Juventus were in control of the tie when Gonzalo Higuain scored twice in the first nine minutes, the latter a penalty.

But Harry Kane pulled a goal back and Higuain missed a second penalty, before Christian Eriksen’s free-kick made it advantage Spurs.

Juve, who have contested two of the past three finals, face the prospect of bowing out early unless they can breach Tottenham’s defence.

TOTTENHAM 0-0 JUVENTUS

6: Interesting to see Son hugging the left touchline. He’s out there because 36-year-old Barzagli is almost playing as a right-back.

He’s vulnerable against pace and won’t be getting too much help from Douglas Costa. Son wins the battle down the left far too easily before seeing his low effort parried away to safety by Buffon.

3: Spurs are straight out of the blocks with a high press and penalty appeal. Benatia heads the ball onto his arm before clearing. Would have been harsh.

Analysis from our reporter Matt Dunn, at Wembley

2: Immaculate silence for David Astori just accentuates how noisy Wembley is tonight otherwise. Not quite Real Madrid levels yet, but then Tottenham aren’t winning 3-0. Yet!

1: OK, we’re off folks. Juventus sporting their snazzy yellow kit this evening. Yep, I’m using the word snazzy without any irony whatsoever.

Analysis from our reporter Matt Dunn, at Wembley

19:44:  Left back was one of the only two positions Pochettino had to put much thought into, and the selection of Ben Davies shows Danny Rose is certainly not in his very best books. Further forward, Pochettino had already let slip that Heung-Min Son was likely to get the nod about Erik Lamela – with the Korean’s current form, he simply could not continue to leave him out of the starting side.

Juventus, meanwhile, are as menacing as Max Allegri promised. Higuain is indeed fit – as too are the influential Blaise Matuidi and Paulo Dybala, both missing from the first leg.

Tottenham surely cannot start as badly as they did in Turin but neither can Juventus be expected to implode again. I’m going for 1-1 – good news for Tottenham but not for the faint-hearted.

TWO-MINUTE WARNING

19:43: They did indeed. Maybe I’m just projecting but Gianluigi Buffon looked a little more emotional than usual. We’re almost underway.

TOTTENHAM vs JUVENTUS

19:40: Quick reminder of the line-ups as the players get ready for the epic Champions League anthem.

I’ve got a feeling the cameras will linger on Buffon for the majority of this…

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Dembele, Eriksen, Dele, Son, Kane.

Subs: Vorm, Rose, Wanyama, Sissoko, Lamela, Lucas, Llorente.

Juventus XI: Buffon, Barzagli, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi, Douglas Costa, Higuain, Dybala.

Subs: Szczesny, Rugani, Lichtsteiner, Asamoah, Marchisio, Sturaro, Bentancur.

ROSE vs POCH

Analysis from our reporter Matt Dunn, at Wembley

19:39:  The long conversation Mauricio Pochettino had with Danny Rose at training yesterday clearly was not on the finer points of stopping Gonzalo Higuain’s supply line from the right.

As a close observer of the session at the session yesterday, I had noticed a couple of Rose’s passes go amiss during simple skills exercises and some fiddling with his beanie while the rest of the squad got on for it. Perhaps the animated conversation that was caught on camera was simply the result of the Spurs boss also seeing something he did not like.

CAN’T GET NO RESPECT…

19:35: Have I honestly used a Rodney Dangerfield reference in the header? As usual, I’m keeping things fresh and current on this blog.

Anyway, Mauricio Pochettino thinks clubs around Europe are starting to respect Tottenham.

“It’s been step by step, a little step every season,” said the Spurs boss.

“After the group stage we improved our reputation in Europe. Last season was a massive disappointment to be out in the first stage, but this year of course the people in Europe start to respect Tottenham.

“They respect the philosophy we build and the football we play. We feel we have respect for the brand of football we show, they respect us in Europe we feel.”

RIO PREDICTS…

19:30: Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is also backing Spurs but has warned them about Juventus duo Paulo Dybala and Blaise Matuidi who will return for the second leg after missing the first game through injury.

“Dybala’s back, Matuidi’s going to be back as well,” Ferdinand said.

“Two huge players, two very influential players for this Juve team. So they’re going to have to be on their mettle Spurs but I’ve got the confidence in their attacking players especially to get the game done.”

LAMPARD PREDICTS

19:25: Spurs will put an end to Juventus’ current unbeaten record by winning tonight’s Champions League last-16 second-leg clash at Wembley, says Frank Lampard.

“Juve’s unbeaten record will probably end and I think Tottenham can win the game,” the Chelsea hero said on BT Sport.

“I really do. I think they’ve got the maturity now, they’ve got the quality in players, particularly going forward.

“Wembley feels like home to them, they’ve beaten lots of good teams at Wembley. It will be a very tough game, they’ll have to organise themselves brilliantly.

“But I think they’ve got the special players going forward that can win the game.”

EMRE CAN DEAL

19:20: Clearly a make-or-break Champions League clash isn’t enough for Juventus, at least that’s what reports have suggested.

Apparently the Italian side will use their trip to England as an opportunity to tie up a deal for Liverpool’s Emre Can.

It’s thought the 24-year-old German international is close to signing a contract with the club.

That might be the plan, but I’d like to see them take on the dreaded M6 and make it back to Heathrow in time for a flight back to Turin…

BUFFON = LEGEND

19:15: When Gianluigi Buffon talks, you listen. No if, buts or maybes.

Tonight could be the Italian’s final Champions League match, and he’s admitted Juventus face the prospect of bowing out early.

“It will be an uphill battle but sometimes you can get caught out going downhill so we are up for the challenge,” he said.

“Tottenham quite clearly have a lot of great attributes, they have a tried and trusted style of play.”

Give me a moment, I think I have something in my eye…

ELSEWHERE

19:10: Spurs aren’t the only ticket in town tonight folks. Manchester City are also in Champions League action.

Pep Guardiola’s side boast a 4-0 aggregate lead from the first encounter last month and could probably sent out the toddlers and still progress.

I’ll keep you updated with all the goals as they go in at the Etihad Stadium.

TEAM NEWS

19:05: Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has made just one change for the Champions League last-16 second leg against Juventus.

Right-back Kieran Trippier comes into the side in place of the suspended Serge Aurier.

As for Juventus, well, they have some key players back who didn’t feature in the 2-2 in Turin last month.

Blaise Matuidi and Paulo Dybala, fresh from netting a late winner against Lazio over the weekend, are back in the starting XI tonight.

So that’s a front three of Douglas Costa, Gonzalo Higuain and Dybala. There’s also a start for 36-year-old defender Andrea Barzagli.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Marc: Haven’t felt nerves like this before a game for such a long time, if ever. These are the nights Spurs fans have wanted to be involved in for so long and Poch and the squad have not let us down. Let’s enjoy every moment.

Sian: They don’t get much bigger than this. I cannot wait to get there tonight to cheer the boys on. Come on you beautiful Spurs.

Alfie: Lots of fans experiencing anxiety over tonight’s game against Juve. We must have confidence in our players, they’ve already taken some big scalps, in Poch we trust. The gaffer will select best team & tactics to try & get this job done.

DIER TIME

18:55: Eric Dier to shine?

A lot will rest on the shoulders of the Tottenham midfielder tonight.

A big display against the Italian champions could not only help get Spurs through, it would also send a big message to England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup this summer.

HOPEFUL HARRY

18:50: Harry Kane already has seven goals in Europe this season but none of those will matter if Spurs go crashing out.

The England striker’s reputation continues to blossom and he will be desperate for another eye-catching display on the big stage.

MANCHESTER CITY vs BASEL

18:46: Here’s the line-ups for what will certainly be the least anticipated Champions League clash since Liverpool against porto yesterday. Aguero, De Bruyne and Otamendi rested.

Manchester City XI: Bravo; Danilo, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko; Yaya Toure, Gundogan, Foden; Sane, Bernardo, Jesus.

Subs: Ederson, Walker, Aguero, De Bruyne, Adarabioyo, Otamendi, Diaz.

TOTTENHAM vs JUVENTUS

18:45: And the line-ups have arrived folks. Son does indeed start ahead of Erik Lamela, who’s among the substitutes.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Dembele, Eriksen, Dele, Son, Kane.

Subs: Vorm, Rose, Wanyama, Sissoko, Lamela, Lucas, Llorente.

Juventus XI: Buffon, Barzagli, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi, Douglas Costa, Higuain, Dybala.

SON TO SHINE?

18:35: Erik Lamela was preferred to Son Heung-min in the first leg in Turin but the South Korean’s two-goal salvo against Huddersfield at the weekend must have put him in the frame to start.

Mauricio Pochettino was giving nothing away at his pre-match press conference, though. We’re about to find out…

CUPPA JOE…

18:30: Before we get started, is Gianluigi Buffon wincing because of the chilly conditions or the fact he’s drinking terrible coffee from a cardboard cup?

Italians don’t do bad java. The Sopranos taught me that…

GOOD EVENING

18:20: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Champions League.

It appears that we’ve got a blockbuster on our hands at Wembley tonight as Spurs host Juventus with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

A 2-2 first-leg draw in Turin last month means Spurs are favourites to progress, but it would take a brave man to discount Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

It’s Harry Kane vs Gonzalo Higuain, Dele Alli vs Paulo Dybala, Son Heung-min vs Douglas Costa…

I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s get started.

Toby Alderweireld will miss Tottenham’s Champions League second leg tie against Juventus.

The Belgium defender recently returned after three months out with a hamstring injury but will not be available at Wembley.

Full-back Serge Aurier is suspended for the last-16 tie, which is poised at 2-2 following Spurs’ dramatic comeback from two goals down in Turin last month.
