Pep Guardiola reveals what Man City must do to compete with Barcelona

Guardiola managed Barcelona for four years, winning three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

He picked up the first trophy of his Manchester City managerial reign last month, beating Arsenal 3-0 at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final.

But the Spaniard knows there is a long way to go to reach the levels of a Barcelona side that has been at the top of the European game for over a decade.

Guardiola said: “It’s completely different players, the players in the past won a lot.

“We are nil, most of us. We are new here. Now we can say we have won one title but it is not comparing.

“It’s not good for us to be compared with that team. That team has dominated for the last decade, 15 or 20 years with different managers and different players.

“Every season, they have won a lot of things and we have won just the first title.

“To join this kind of team, you have to be there for a long time – many years – but we’ve won just one title, that’s all.”

Though Man City have won just the one trophy since Guardiola took over at the Etihad for the start of the 2016-17 season, they have another all but won.

Guardiola’s men are 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League with just nine games remaining.

They are also all but through to the Champions League quarter finals, taking a 4-0 lead into their second leg against Basel.

That second leg takes place on Wednesday with City going on a warm weather training break to Abu Dhabi after the weekend’s Premier League clash with Stoke City.
