Italian election results: Right-wing head SAVAGES Left for being ‘YEARS AWAY’ from voters

Right-wing leader Giorgia Meloni savaged the  Left after the incumbent Democratic Party (PD) Government saw its number collapse at the polls.

The Fratelli d’Italia founder slammed the PD for ignoring Italians calling for changes to the political system during their five years in power.

Ms Meloni said: “There has been a huge call for discontinuity from citizens.

“The self-referential left has been resoundingly punished because of its insensitivity to the needs of Italians.”

Fratelli d’Italia, alongside coalition partners, secured 37 percent of the vote at the but will need to seek permission from President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella as the party failed to win the 40 percent majority needed to form the next Italian Government.

Speaking in Rome as results continued to trickle in, Ms Meloni further slammed Matteo Renzi’s PD and other leftist parties for their “outdated” perception of Italian politics.

Ms Meloni told the press: “The themes the left use in its election campaign were absolutely years away from what the people need.

“The left is now locked into its own sitting-room telling tales about a reality that no longer exists, unable to take care of the needs and demands coming from the citizens.”

i has since announced his resignation from the party because of the defeat at the polls, saying he will focus on his role as senator following his election representing the city of Florence.

With the new Italian electoral law, if no party or coalition reaches a majority, it will be up to President Mattarella to decide which party or coalition will be given the chance to form a government post-election.

According to JPMorgan, since 1992 it has taken an average of 51 days to form a new government, but with the recent projections this may well go on for longer.

But after a stalemate in the 2013 election it took more than two months to form a government.
