Italian election results: Eurosceptic leads ‘REVOLUTION of common sense’ against the EU

League and Five Star Movement, two populist parties totalled around 50 percent of votes, .

While Mr Salvini has yet to make a public statement in the wake of League’s success, one of the party’s deputy secretaries Lorenzo Fontana has proclaimed a revolution in Italy.

He said for too long the political establishment across the Continent had “thought they could cage European people”, but this result is now a remarkable change in that.

Mr Fontana said: “I thank all Italian citizens who have given us their trust.

“We wanted to thank and stress the fact that the line proposed by Matteo Salvini is the right one.

“League goes from North to South. It was a choice that was rewarded.

“In addition to this, what we see is a clear sign against Europe that has mistreated the Italian people until now.

“A Europe that has thought about relationships, numbers, deficit, and not the well-being of Italian citizens.

“This is a clear sign for all those strong powers that thought they could cage European people.

“It is a clear answer and for us this is only the beginning. The revolution of common sense has begun today.”

Mr Salvini is due to hold a press conference at 11am CET, but thanks his followers via Twitter.

He wrote: “My first word: ‘thank you!’”

League official Giancarlo Giorgetti said: “These are historic results for the League. We’re picking up votes from North to South.

“We had four percent in 2013, now projections say 16 to 17 percent, perhaps more.

“We’ll discuss things with our allies but this is a historic moment for the League.”

Five Star Movement also sent a warning that is likely to chill down the spines of the political establishment after amassing over 30 percent of the votes.

The eurosceptic movement’s former leader Alessandro Di Battista said: “If these numbers are confirmed, it will be a triumph for M5S, a remarkable apotheosis, which demonstrates the goodness of the work we have done.

“And above all, it shows another thing, that everyone will have to come and talk to us and this will probably be the first time.

“They will have to come and talk to us using our methods of transparency, fairness, credibility, based on the proposals and solutions we want for this country.

“And this will happen in the coming days, in the coming weeks.”
