Italian election pictures: Who won the Italy Election 2018?

Pictures from Italy show thousands flocking to polling stations for the 2018 Italian election as the country trialled a new electoral system – which saw thousands of ballot papers have to be reprinted at the last minute.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and party leaders Silvio Berlusconi, Matteo Salvini, Matteo Renzi and Luigi Di Maio were all pictured casting their votes on Sunday.

A topless protestor launched a furious tirade against Forza Italia leader Silvio Berlusconi, 81, at a polling station in Milan.

The former Italian Prime Minster is leading a centre-right coalition which looks set to win the most seats in the lower house of parliament.

However, anti-establishment Five Star Movement are expected to be the largest single party.

Luigi Di Maio’s eurosceptic party have won four seats out of five in the Upper House so far and exit polls suggest they could take more than 30 percent.

But if no party reaches a majority, Italian President Sergio Mattarella will decide which party gets to form a government.

There could be weeks of negotiating to form a coalition government.
