ECB chief Draghi tells wife to ‘shut up’ as she dismisses chances of him being Italy PM

EUROPEAN Central Bank President Mario Draghi was filmed telling his wife to “shut up” after she told journalists he would not join any government as “he is not a politician”.

Mr Draghi and his wife Serena casted their ballots at around 9 am local time (8am GMT) in Rome.

Journalists were waiting outside of the polling station that has been set up in a high school to ask him questions about his future in politics.

A reporter from Italian press agency Ansa asked whether he would join forces with Silvio Berlusconi, whose centre-right wing coalition has been leading in the projection polls for the last month.

She asked the ECB chief: “Would you accept to become the next prime minister if Berlusconi asked you?”

She also asked: “Would you create a government with Matteo Salvini?”

Mr Draghi, who shook his head to make clear he wasn’t willing to answer any questions, walked to the car waiting for him, while his wife said: “He doesn’t do the government, he is not a politician”.

But bizarrely then ECB chief was then heard scolding her while they were both entering the car, saying “c’mon, shut up”.

The reporter’s questions come after Mr Berlusconi told Italian newspaper Libero last month “Draghi would be the right person for every role” in his government.

His words caused friction with Mr Berlusconi ally and Lega’s leader Mr Salvini, who commented: “Mr Draghi did good things but has also made many mistakes.

“The banking reforms coming from abroad have been a massacre for Italian savers.

“It’s not Draghi’s fault, but he is part of a system that has brought rules upon us”.
