Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool take on Newcastle after fourth-placed Tottenham, in equally impressive form, host Huddersfield at Wembley.

Should they both win Liverpool would have 60 points, temporarily going ahead of Manchester United into second, and Tottenham would have 58. Chelsea have 53.

*Liverpool are unbeaten in 14 matches at Anfield this season. They have won eight of those games.

23: The Reds have had plenty of practice at trying to break down a closed shop. But they aren’t applying it. Everything’s far too slow.

20: Close! Salah had no right to shoot from that angle and ends up nearly sneaking it past Dubravka at his near post. Confidence personified.

17: Weird tactics from the Reds. They have clearly marked Dummett as a weakness for Newcastle and keep launching crossfield passes for Salah on that side. Not yielded anything.

14: Sadio Mane runs at Christian Atsu but completely forgets to bring the ball with him. Mildly embarrassing.

Anyway, Mohamed Salah has his first effort of the game but it smashes Paul Dummett straight in the face.

11: Attack vs Defence. That’s all that’s happening here at Anfield folks. Newcastle playing like they did against Manchester City a few months ago.

8: First chance! Lascelles completely misses a routine cross and the ball falls to Mane inside the six-yard box. He can’t adjust his feet quickly enough and Firmino eventually slices wide.

5: No early signs of a goal for the hosts. Newcastle really are rigidly sticking to their task. And that task is defending for 90 minutes.

3: Looks like Newcastle have gone for a 5-4-1 with Dwight Gayle leading the line by himself. The Toon will hunker down and try and stop Liverpool from a spot of target practice.

17:27: Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez: “The relationship with Liverpool, the connection, is so obvious. We just have to make sure we do our best in this game and then afterwards wish them all the best.

“You have to have this confidence coming from the game against Manchester United, coming from the first half against Bournemouth. There are a lot of positives that we have seen and we have to make sure we replicate this at Anfield.”

17:25: Liverpool’s ambitions may now have gone beyond merely securing Champions League football to actively pursuing second place.

Fired by prolific pair Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, the Reds temporarily moved into that spot last week as they produced another brilliant attacking performance to sweep aside West Ham.

Beating Newcastle, and their former manager Rafael Benitez, would lift them back to second, at least until Manchester United play Crystal Palace on Monday. That would set up a tense trip to Old Trafford next week.

17:20: Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson returns to the starting line-up at home to Newcastle as one of two changes made by Jurgen Klopp.

Dejan Lovren comes in to partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence with James Milner and Joel Matip dropping to the bench.

Newcastle make three changes with Mikel Merino, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy all drafted in with Jonjo Shelvey out injured and Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez relegated to the roles of substitute.
