Best supplements for constipation – these 15p a day capsules could cure your stomach ache

Constipation affects people of all ages, but can usually be treated at home, according to the NHS.

Symptoms can include having dry, hard or lumpy poo. You’re likely to have constipation if you haven’t had a poo at least three times within a week.

The condition can also cause stomach ache and feeling bloated.

But, you could relieve constipation pain by taking glucomannan supplements, scientist have claimed.

Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fibre, derived from the root of the konjac plant, which is found in Asia.

Studies have reported glucomannan lowering cholesterol, promoting a healthy colon, and even encouraging bowel movements.

The supplement could work as a prebiotic in helping to pass a stool, said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

Glucomannan is considered a natural laxative, and promotes a healthier, bulkier stool that requires less straining when being passed, he added.

“Constipation is a common problem typically caused by a low-fibre diet, dehydration and lack of exercise.

“For constipated individuals, glucomannan and other bulk-forming laxatives typically encourage a bowel movement within 12 to 24 hours of intake.”

Glucomannan has also been linked to helping with weight loss.

It may help to promote a feeling of fullness, and suppresses appetite.

Constipation may be caused by not drinking enough fluids, not exercising enough, or ignoring the urge to pass a stool.

Some dietary and lifestyle changes could help to prevent constipation from returning.

Try increasing the amount of fibre you eat, and adding in some wheat bran, oats or linseed to your diet.

Speak to a pharmacist if diet and lifestyle changes alone aren’t helping to relieve your pain.
