Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather: Boxing legend Marvin Hagler provides update on rematch

came out of retirement for the second time in his life last year after a war of words with UFC star spiralled into a sensational crossover fight.

The pair met in the boxing ring on August 26 in the most lucrative fight of all-time, with the bout reportedly generating more than £300million of revenue.

And while McGregor was stopped by the referee in the 10th round of his professional boxing debut, the Irishman gave an impressive account of himself against one of the greatest fighters of all time.

with the idea of Mayweather returning the favour and taking on two-weight UFC champion McGregor in a mixed martial arts setting.

“Wouldn’t it be interesting if we see Mayweather fight his game now?,” said Hagler.

“I don’t think that will happen. Mayweather is going to stay retired probably and McGregor has still got a great future ahead of him too.

“Good luck to both of them.”

Hagler is generally accepted as one of the greatest boxers of all time, unifying the middleweight division and winning 13 defences of the belts.

Now, British star Anthony Joshua is trying to do the same in the heavyweight category.

And Hagler sees no reason he cannot succeed – as long as he takes his time.

“I think Anthony’s got a great shot, a great future, as long as they don’t rush him too fast, you know, that’s the only problem,” Hagler added.

“Right now I think that [Anthony Joshua] is the new superstar in the boxing world.

“And he has great opportunities, also there is a lot of money out there to be made!

“Anthony, I met him last year and what a great kid he was.

“And the fight there with [Wladimir] Klitschko, I hated to see anybody lose this fight because I like Klitschko, but Anthony’s the future.”
