The quake is a massive aftershock following a series of earthquakes which have devastated the region.
On Monday a 6.4 magnitude quake was recorded 142km from the city of Mount Hagen and on Sunday the region was hit by a 7.5 magnitude quake.
At least 15 people are believed to have been killed in the initial quake on Sunday.
