Roger Federer reveals how it feels to overtake Rafael Nadal as world No 1

The Swiss star regained his place as world No 1 after triumphing at this month’s Rotterdam Open.

Federer had been off top spot since November 2012 but after copious amounts of surgery on his knee, the 36-year-old has returned to his former self, winning Wimbledon and the Australian Open in the past year.

And the tennis legend has been reflecting on his achievement as he prepares for the Indian Wells Masters next week.

“That means a lot to me,” he told German news outlet Noz.

“Otherwise, I would not have participated in the tournament in Rotterdam.

“Some experts have said that I had totally turned everything around to be in Rotterdam.

“But at the end of last year I had in mind that maybe I’m playing there and not in Dubai.”

Federer’s recent success could be due to a change in his coaching team.

Stefan Edberg did not travel with the veteran after his surgery.

Instead, Severin Luthi remained and was partnered by former world No. 3 player Ivan Ljubicic.

“But even more, it’s thanks to the entire team and the coaches over all these years,” Federer continued.

“They pushed me forward, they helped me, they inspired and motivated me.

“So it is a moment for all, where you are at the top of the podium.

“That is very special.”
