A Wrinkle In Time: First reactions are VERY mixed – ‘Adaptation DOESN’T work’

Although reviews will not be published just yet, critics who have seen it are now able to voice their initial reactions on social media.

Whilst some are very positive, others are a little more reserved.

Generally speaking, director Ava DuVernay has been praised for her attempts to adapt the 1962 novel of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle for the big screen.

The problem is, as some have argued, that it may not have been “filmable”.

Mark Cassidy tweeted: “It’s telling that Film Twitter is staying silent about A WRINKLE IN TIME. It’s a movie they really wanted to like, as opposed to one they couldn’t wait to tear apart.”

CinemaBlend’s Conner Schwerdtfeger said: “So #WrinkleInTime is visually ambitious and very faithful to the source material.

“However, it’s also kind of all over the place and doesn’t quite land the themes of the book. Chris Pine is a standout & Ava DuVernay deserves credit for what she does with a nearly unfilmable novel.”

Gregory Ellwood wrote: “Since embargo is up…saw A Wrinkle In Time…it’s intentions are noble, but this adaptation doesn’t work. Movie has a ton of issues. Loved the Sade and Demi Lovato songs tho. Looking forward to what Ava does next.”

There was a lot of praise, though – Kat Candler said: “With extraordinary vision and a big pounding heart, A Wrinkle in Time is a gorgeous love letter to the next generation of warriors. #lovelovelove.”

“#WrinkleInTime is what happens when one of your favorite childhood books comes to life and it’s a candy-colored rainbow of labor and love starring all your (internet) best friends,” said Rachel Paige.

The account Geek Girl Diva took aim at those gleefully waiting to criticise the movie, saying: “Some of the responses I’ve seen to A Wrinkle In Time’s less glowing reviews seems like a gleeful chorus of ‘I knew it was gonna suck.’ Why are some people so openly looking for it to fail? I don’t get it.”

Whatever the critics’ consensus, AWIT should still be able to count on a decent haul at the box office.

A Wrinkle In Time is out on March 9.
