EU claims Team GB’s Winter Olympic medal haul to crown THEMSELVES winner of games

The European Parliament attempted to monopolise on the successes of individual member states by claiming their medals for their own.

In a post to the European Parliament’s Instagram, they said: “Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“If the EU was a team, it would be top of the podium.”

The post was accompanied by a picture of a victorious EU standing atop the podium – dressed in the bloc’s trademark blue – while flanked by Norway in second place and Canada in third.

They went on to call on users to share the post “if you are proud of the success of Europe’s athletes”.

The tally of 134 trophies supposedly won by the bloc includes the UK’s five medal haul – which featured one gold and four bronze in the biggest win for Team GB in the event’s history.

The EU has also kept a tally of their ‘victories’ on their website – which also ranks each continent, putting Europe on top.

However, the bloc notes: “The comparison is of course not entirely fair.

“The 28 EU countries have much higher quota of starting positions than individual competing nations.

“The fictitious ‘EU team’ has therefore a better chance to win medals than the other participating countries.”

It is not the first time the EU have attempted to claim themselves as an Olympic superpower as a result of the success of national athletes.

The official European Parliament Twitter account tweeted its “huge congratulations” to the European winners at the 2016 Rio games.

Attached was a graphic placing an EU Olympian at the peak of the podium combining all 325 medals into one federal superstate haul.

And similarly the bloc decided to count Team GB’s impressive 67 medal haul in their tally.
