63: Sanchez draws a free-kick in Sanchez territory, and you know what, Sanchez is NOT gonna take it. Strange. Anyway Romelu Lukaku steps up and bangs it straight into the wall.

60: Hour gone and we’re still goalless in Seville. This is the awkward ‘stick or twist’ phase of the game. Will United content to take a 0-0 back to Old Trafford? Based on what I’m seeing, the answer is a resounding YES! Sevilla might be happy with that too.

57: Smalling blocks Muriel’s snapshot for a corner, which is too close to De Gea.

Urgently needed: Quality in the final third!

54: Sloppy from both sides. Muriel is giving the ball away for fun and Lukaku can’t seem to get involved. I imagine Sevilla’s top scorer Ben Yedder will be on sooner rather than later.

Vazquez tries to bend one in the far corner but it’s over the top.

51: United have themselves a set-piece. Can they finally make the most of one? Nope. The corner is far too deep and Sevilla clear.

48: Suicidal stuff from Matic, who passes it straight to Muriel just inside his own penalty area. The forward takes a touch but inexplicably spanks it a mile high and wide.

HT: “I think Mourinho’s lost a little bit of trust in him, especially for tonight, a big European away game.

Anyway, that was the last action of the half and Manchester United will count themselves lucky to go in level at the break.

45: What?! How on earth did David de Gea save that? Add £40million onto his price-tag. The Spanish keeper makes an unbelievable reflex save from Muriel, who was completely unmarked five-yards out.

44: Can Sevilla punish Valencia? Nope. Valencia loses possession from a United corner and the hosts break at speed. It’s three vs three but Smalling makes a crucial interception.

De Gea then makes another spectacular save after an improvised flick from Nzonzi.

43: Booked. Alexis Sanchez is the next in the notebook after bringing down Navas. It’ll give Sevilla the chance to swing it into the box, which they decline and lose possession.

De Gea dives well to his left to deny Correa.

40: Stop, start, stop, start. Little fouls going on all over the place. It’s not making for a very good watch.

39: Oh bloody hell, what’s going on now? Matic makes the fatal mistake of breathing on Vazquez, who drops to the deck in dramatic fashion. Referee Clement Turpin ignores the whole thing.

38: Banega with a rare terrible decision. He’s got options left and right but slips it too far wide and Correa sees his angled shot blocked by Smalling.

35: Handbags! Everything’s getting niggly here as Mercado shoves Alexis off the ball. Nothing really in it but it slows play down even further.

32: Correa tip-toes his way past Valencia and Smalling but shoots straight at De Gea. Banega then sticks one on Lukaku, but avoids the booking.

29: The referee gives Lukaku a ticking off. Not about his abysmal miss a few minutes earlier – it was about the battle going on with Lenglet.

26: Best chance of the game goes begging. Sanchez picks Lukaku out with a peach of a cross-field pass but the Belgian balloons it miles over. Terrible.

23: Blimey, is it past the watershed? Nzonzi collects a booking for clashing with Sanchez, who promptly pulls his shorts up past his backside.

I’ve got the magnifying glass out and there is no evidence of Nzonzi’s studs on the left buttock…

20: You just knew something like this would happen. Herrera’s twanged something and wants off. Here comes Paul Pogba! The Frenchman might not be 100 per cent fit, but he’s playing anyway.

19: Positive signs for United as Lukaku nearly bundles his way through both Mercado and Lenglet. The centre-backs don’t look particularly keen on that battle this evening.

16: Sanchez should be doing better. He’s sent through and beats the offside trap but a moment of hesitation allows Mercado to recover.

13: Pretty congested in midfield. There’s no space for anyone to work with and I notice McTominay has a man-marking job on Correa. It’s working well so far.

10: It’s taken ten minutes, but Romelu Lukaku has touched the ball! He wins a corner but it’s quickly dealt with.

9: Manchester United need to settle. They are looking rushed in possession and a bit fragile. Keep it on the deck, lads.

Young is alert to a neat one-two between Vazquez and Muriel and slides in to stop the danger.

6: David de Gea gets his first touch of the evening. He makes a comfortable save to deny Muriel from distance.

3: Our referee tonight is Clement Turpin. No reason why I’ve mentioned it other than I had a brief bout of Dyslexia and thought his name was turnip.

19:30: Jose Mourinho has just been speaking with BT Sport.

He was a little prickly with the interviewer before answering why Paul Pogba didn’t start.

“You always go to the one that doesn’t start,” says Mourinho.

“McTominay is working hard every day, he is feeling good, feeling strong. He played the last match for 90 minutes. Paul was not able to play last Saturday and we believe this is the kind of game of course demands quality but is the kind of game I think a player must feel 100 per cent.”

FERDINAND ON POGBA

19:28: Rio Ferdinand admits he was surprised to see Paul Pogba named on the substitutes bench against Sevilla tonight.

“I’m surprised Paul’s not playing,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport. “But if he says that Paul is less than 100 per cent fit and you can’t take that risk then you’ve got to believe him.

“I think the problem with Paul is that he started the season so well and I think he’s been affected by the injury and the momentum has been affected. I’d like to see him get back into form.”

Sanchez has only scored once in five games since moving from Arsenal last month but has added a layer of attacking quality to Jose Mourinho’s side.

“How do we stop Sanchez? I don’t know, we’ll have to block him in some way, maybe tie him up with a rope,” the 43-year-old said. “He’s a fantastic player, I saw him play in Italy. He has improved so much as his career has progressed, he’s very fast, he leads counter-attacks, he’s very strong.”
