Call Me By Your Name sequel WON’T happen? Writer dampens rumours

But despite the director’s plans to continue exploring Elio (Timothee Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer) into later life, the screenwriter has poured cold water on the idea.

James Ivory – who won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay – said, according to Gay Times: “I heard about it. I don’t know how you could make such sequels if they’re far in the future.

“It’s not possible to make Timothée look likes he’s 40. All the make-up in the world and the rest of it and changing voice is not going to do it. I don’t know how.”

“No one has contacted me,” he added.

“You have to think, ‘What does André Aciman [novel author] think about that?’ It’s his creation. No one seems to know how he feels about it.”

Chalamet is the bookies’ second favourite for Best Actor at the Academy Awards next month, but Gary Oldman is the runaway favourite – considered unbeatable after multiple wins at other ceremonies.

Still, Chalamet’s star is in rapid ascent; with a role also in Lady Bird and in Hostiles.

He’ll also be in Beautiful Boy alongside Steve Carrell, playing a young man struggling with meth addiction.

Hammer, meanwhile, will be in Sorry To Bother You alongside Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson.

He’ll then be seen in Hotel Mumbai, Home Shopper and Freak Shift.

Call Me By Your Name is still playing in select cinemas.
