Roger Federer: Swiss star did NOT plan to regain world No 1 spot

That is according to his tennis coach Severin Luthi. Federer, 36, became the oldest player to sit top of the world rankings after beating Robin Haase in the Rotterdam Open last week.

The Swiss star has taken the record from Andre Agassi, who was world No 1 at the age of 31.

Federer has rolled back the years in recent months, and is playing some of the finest tennis of his glittering career.

But Luthi admits the veteran never planned to top the world again.

“I always believed that he could win big tournaments,” he told Blick.

“But to be the No. 1, you have to win much and constantly, which becomes even tougher when you are older.

“That’s why we didn’t have a general plan for the No. 1.

“We saw last summer he had already had a chance, but then it turned stupid with his back injury.

“Anyway, anyone who spent so many weeks at the top doesn’t feel that seeking that position is necessary.

“That he did it is still incredible. “He always loved the first position because it gives him a further confidence boost.”

Federer’s win at the Rotterdam Open means he now has 97 career titles to his name.

The tennis legend may be back on the court as soon as next week if he decides to take part in the Dubai Tennis Championships.
