Virgin Media BOOST – Battle for UK’s fastest broadband package hots up

Virgin Media’s top broadband package currently is the VIVID fibre broadband, which offers 300Mbps download speeds.

And now the UK’s fastest widely available broadband is set to get even better, with Virgin Media planning a 350Mbps offering.

ISPreview revealed that Virgin Media announced the news in their latest financial results, and the package could be launched as early as this spring.

BT Openreach’s G.fast broadband pilot offers 330Mbps speeds, but by the end of last year was only expected to reach one million premises in the UK.

By 2020 they’re expected to be able to serve three million homes.

Other broadband providers offer faster download speeds, such as Hyperoptic.

They provide broadband packages offering speeds of up to 1GB a second, however this is only on offer to 30 UK towns and cities.

This means that Virgin Media offers the fastest widely available broadband in the UK.

Their current 300Mbps package and the upcoming 350Mbps offering is available to the vast majority of the 14million homes on their network.

Virgin Media are hoping to extend this network by an additional four million premieres by the end of 2019 or 2020.

The news comes after Express.co.uk last month revealed that Virgin Media is offering existing customers the chance to upgrade their older TiVo hardware to the flagship TV V6 box for free.

Virgin TV customers can upgrade their ageing TiVo boxes to the next-generation TV V6 box for free.

The new scheme is set to one of the largest customer upgrade programmes ever carried out in the UK.

Virgin Media says its pleased with the adoption rate, which is much faster than its previous TiVo box in the same period.

And now anyone who pays for a Virgin TV and broadband bundle will be able to upgrade their older set-top box for Virgin TV’s nifty new V6 box at no additional cost.

Best of all, Virgin Media won’t even make you commit to a new contract.

You’ll simply be able to swap-out your older Virgin TV set-top box for the all-new flagship hardware.

Virgin says the vast majority of TV customers will be able to self-install the TV V6 into their existing set-up – avoiding the need for an engineer visit.

At the time of the announcement, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, David Bouchier said: “We believe that our finest kit shouldn’t just be for new customers.

“So today we’re kicking off one of the largest existing customer upgrade programmes ever seen in the UK, accelerating the rollout of our best ever set-top box.

“Our customers tell us how much they love using the V6 box and watch more TV when they have one.

“As a central entertainment hub, fired by our superior ultrafast broadband, the V6 is built for apps and the best on-demand TV experience – whether its iPlayer, Netflix or thousands of Box Sets.

“Rightfully, our customers expect the best, and with top-notch TV to lightning-fast broadband, that’s exactly what they are getting.”
