Day of the Shining Star in pictures: North Korea pays tribute to late leader Kim Jong-il

Kim Jong-il was born on February 16, 1942 to President Kim il Sung and Kim Jong Suk at the Paektusan Secret Camp. His birth date is now referred to as the Day of the Shining Star.

The commemorations take place in the country’s capital Pyongyang, marking the occasion with mass gymnastics, theatrical performances, fireworks and military demonstrations. The holiday begins on February 16 and lasts for two days.

Government and business offices, banks, and retailers close for business on the Day of the Shining Star.
