Photographers from 125 countries entered the contest and the jury selected 42 nominees in the eight categories, which celebrates the very best in photo journalism.
The contest is free to enter and drew entries from around the world: 4,548 photographers from 125 countries submitted 73,044 images.
The World Press Photo of the Year honours the photographer whose visual creativity made an image that captures an event or issue of great journalistic importance.
The winner of the World Press Photo of the Year will be announced at the Awards Show in Amsterdam on 12 April 2018.
