PS5 release date UPDATE – Sony fans may not be able to do without THIS at launch

Sony have already confirmed that the PS5 is coming, with it just a matter of time until the PS4 successor gets released.

Experts are predicting the next PlayStation could get released next year or in 2020, but not much else is known about the next-gen console.

However, one developer has teased wha one of the main selling points of the PS5 will be.

Harold Vancol is the Creative Director at Grab Games, which has created the John Wick VR game and Knockout League.

And, judging by his latest comments, it looks like VR could be one of the main selling points of the PS5.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine UK (via Wccftech), Vancol said he did not think the PS5 should be bundled with a PSVR 2 headset.

However, he said the two products should be seen as “essential” together.

He said: “Buying a new console is a big undertaking for a lot of people, and buying the headset that I think people want to see in the future of PlayStation can almost be like buying a new console.

“So having these purchases separated gives each thing its own time to shine. However, PlayStation 5 and PSVR should be considered essential together.”

PSVR released back in October 2016, providing a far cheaper entry point to virtual reality than PC headsets like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

It remains to be seen whether Sony will take the same approach with PSVR 2, or offer a more expensive headset.

If the PSVR 2 launches alongside the PS5, then it could be arriving in two years time.

Previous estimates have suggested the PS5 won’t be released until 2020.

That’s according to industry analyst Michael Pachter, who told the 1099 Podcast that the new console could launch in either 2019 or 2020.

“I think that’s exactly when you’ll see one (PS5) 2019 or 2020, and if I had to bet, it’s 2020,” he said.

“Sony’s making so much money with the PS4 that I think they’ll continue to milk it as long as they can milk it.

“And I think the natural extension of that is the PS4 Pro becomes the default PS4, and they just knock that price down to $250 when they can and they keep selling it – a ton of those.”

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot late last year also said he believes the PS5 release date was a “minimum of two years away”.

During an investors’ call he said: “As Sony launched PlayStation 4 Pro last year and Microsoft Xbox One X this year, we think we still have a minimum of two years in front of us before something new is coming.

“But that’s our perception, we don’t have any confidential information on that front.”

Guillemot’s comments would pencil in a PS5 release date for late 2019, or in 2020 – the same as Pachter’s predictions.
