Serkan Topal, a deputy in the Turkish parliament, has suggested Turkey and Syria restore diplomatic communication.
He said: “Ankara and Damascus have to put dialogue back on track.
“I brought the issue to the agenda at a parliamentary session, pointing out that it has to be discussed in the ministerial council.
“So far, we haven’t received a response with regard to the initiative.
“But I hope that it will be positive and that we will get it in the closest time.”
The latest development comes just days after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said his country posed no threat to the Syria Government.
Onur Öymen, a retired Turkish diplomat, has suggested the renewed interest in dialogue between the countries means President Erdogan has not given up hope of working with Assad in the future.
He said: “In this case, the parties have to establish a liaison, even if it is not high-level.
“It has to be done to fill the informational gap, to clear up a possible misunderstanding between the parties in case of unforeseen events on the Turkish-Syrian border, to resolve humanitarian issues, work on civilian protection initiatives.”
The news is unlikely to please Washington, who have become increasingly frustrated with Turkey.
Since World War Two Turkey and the US have been close allies, working together to fight terrorism in the Middle East, and previously vowed to cooperate with each other to defeat the Assad regime.
However, diplomatic relations have recently turned sour between Washington and Ankara.
US military are providing support to moderate Kurdish opposition forces in Syria in the fight against Assad.
However, Ankara considers the Kurdish forces as terrorists and fear that the group may gain autonomy of Syrian land bordering Turkey with American help.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag has threatened to attack US special forces who were working with the Kurds.
He warned earlier this month that anyone fighting alongside the Kurds “is our target”.
He added that “there is no chance that we will make a distinction at this point” between the US and Kurdish fighters.
He also accused the American troops of wearing “terrorists’ clothes”.
This week Donald Trump’s Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, is due to visit the country and US officials have acknowledged that “difficult conversations” will be had with Erdogan’s Government during the trip.
