F1 news: Max Verstappen aims sly dig at Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes

Hamilton clinched his fourth world title last year after seeing off the challenge from Sebastian Vettel.

Heading into the 2017 season, Red Bull were expected to give Mercedes a strong push for the Constructors’ Championship.

But it was Ferrari that gave Mercedes the strongest fight, although they were no match for Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

The new campaign is only six weeks away as teams get prepared to topple Mercedes and the likes of McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull are all expected to push Mercedes even harder this season.

However, Verstappen claims nobody would be able to catch him if he was in control of a Red Bull car with a Mercedes engine.

“I think that if we had a Mercedes engine in the back, they would never see us again,” Verstappen told Motorsport.com.

“Ours just isn’t that stable compared to what Mercedes and Ferrari have.

“But it has to do with several things. Otherwise they would have solved it a long time ago, of course.”

Verstappen finished atop the podium on two occasions last season – in Malaysia and Mexico – but the Dutch driver claims his team were possibly “too optimistic” in their expectations.

”They thought about going for a low drag configuration, but for some reason it just didn’t work out,” Verstappen added.

“Maybe it was a bit too optimistic. But you’ve seen that the team can turn things around very quickly.

“Of course, by then your season is already lost, but it does give you confidence for the future that it can go in the right direction.”
