Samsung Galaxy S8 owners have been waiting patiently for news on when they’ll get access to Android 8 Oreo.
This major update was released by Google last year and, despite many smartphone makers including Sony and Nokia releasing the new software, Samsung has kept quiet on when a launch might be expected.
Rumours have been rife that a release is imminent with a number of leaks and the fact the Oreo beta programme has now come to end all pointing to an official launch.
Now some new information has appeared online which could suggest Oreo is coming to some Samsung users by the end of this month.
According to SamMobile, a reader of the site got in touch with Samsung Care to ask when the upgrade would be coming to their smartphone.
The answer from the Korean technology firm is the Oreo upgrade plan is due to start before the end of the February.
The response in full, reads: “Thank you for contacting Samsung.
“Please find hereafter, our response.
“The launch of Android 8 on galaxy S8 is scheduled for the end of February.”
Although this may sound like exciting news for this flagship device it doesn’t necessarily mean everyone will get instant access to Oreo.
It’s likely Samsung will rollout the update over time and, if you have a device on contract with a mobile network, you’re unlikely to see any changes for a number of weeks.
Once Samsung is ready to launch Oreo to devices purchased directly from them, those who purchased via a network will have to wait for tests to be carried out before a download becomes available.
This can take weeks with some users having to wait months when a similar situation happened last year with Andorid Nougat on the Galaxy S7.
More news on Android Oreo could be revealed at Mobile World Congress with Samsung launching its next generation Galaxy S9 at the yearly event.
It’s likely this new flagship will be running Oreo out of the box.
Once this device is finally unveiled, the floodgates could open for other Samsung phones to get Google’s latest operating system.
